One of the most important qualities that will hold a relationship together and make it solid is EMPATHY.
Empathy (according to Merriam-Webster) is the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another.
So what’s the opposite of empathy?
I would say it’s apathy, defined as having an uncaring attitude and lack of interest.
Sometimes we put up with people who demonstrate more apathy than empathy. These are the people that are always talking about themselves and when it’s your turn, they hardly hear a word you’re saying. Or they sit and pretend that they’re listening to you while they’re scrolling/texting on their phone.
When it comes to folks like this, it’s your responsibility to set boundaries (which is something I’ll address in another post). People can only treat you the way you allow them to.
If your desire is to have deeper, more meaningful relationships with people who show empathy for you and others, it’s time to up your game by making sure this is something that YOU demonstrate to others in your own life. Remember, like attracts like!
