Why Goal-Setting for Weight Loss Doesn’t Work

Having a long-term goal like “I want to lose 40 lbs by my birthday” is great, but at the same time, it can also feel overwhelming (as in “OMG! I have to give up my chocolate AND exercise more?) and far reaching (as in “I need this weight off like yesterday!”).

If you’re anything like me, you want it all and you want it all, RIGHT NOW. There used to be a time when I would subscribe to a 28-day weight loss plan, praying with fingers & toes crossed that I would lose at least 10 lbs “just to get me started”. But the anxiety and stress created behind that intention is what got me off to a bad start, before I pressed go.

Can you relate?

I call these short-term ‘diets’ “snake oil in-a-box”. They’re always packaged up so nice and pretty…they’re even very believable. But once you get started, you soon realize it’s not what you thought it would be. You end up giving up and you’re back where you started.

What works much better is to be open to experimentation. Not only is this less overwhelming, it helps in maintaining motivation, building confidence, and creating long-term health habits for the big win!

As a matter of fact, I choose to perform daily experiments. Each meal is an experiment as a way to feel into my body and how it reacts to certain foods I each, what time of day I eat, and how much I eat. Each self-care routine is an experiment as a way of tuning into my energy levels and what I need for self-care. Every day I wake up is an experiment as to what works for me in my life.

When you choose to experiment with things, it’s much more fun than working towards achieving a goal.

Can you just feel the difference in that sentence alone? It’s the difference between choosing masculine energy vs feminine energy.

When you experiment, you’ll create the energy of creativity, curiosity and connection. You’ll actually start to feel better physically & emotionally, and all while creating a win-win for yourself!

So remember: changing your mindset from achieving that big goal to being in the mindset of creative experimentation will help you stay on track, in more ways than one.

What can you experiment with today?

And if you feel like you need a little help with choosing some of those fun experiments, and staying on track with them, that’s where I can help!
