A couple of months ago, I found myself slipping back into old patterns of thinking. You see, I’ve been on the journey of healing my body image issues for a very long time. People always think that because I’m a nutritionist and a yoga teacher, I have it all together.
I’m not perfect, by any means, but I do pride myself in being very committed to change and open to new possibilities for my life. I’m committed to being the very best that I can be and doing what it takes to get there.
So back to a couple of months ago…I started a new journaling process to help me release my mental junk. It’s called “Morning Pages”. You may have heard of it.
Julia Cameron, the author of “The Artist’s Way” created the process years ago for artists and other creatives as a way to free-up space for their creative work. It’s pretty amazing, so if you haven’t heard of it, be sure to look it up.
So there I was one early morning, writing my Morning Pages, and something interesting came up. What came through for me as I wrote was:
“I HATE the bags under my eyes and the cellulite on my thighs”
First of all, rarely do I use the word “hate” about anything. I can’t remember the last time I said I hated something. But obviously, I still had some residual body image junk that needed to be released.
Why is this story important for you to know? Here’s the thing:
You can’t ‘hate’ your body into shape.
What that means is no matter how many times you say (to yourself, your girlfriends, your husband/boyfriend, etc) “I hate my arms”, “I hate my thighs”, or “I’m so fat, I hate my body”, nothing will change for the better.
Hate is the polar opposite of love and NOTHING good is created through hate.
- you can’t hate your flabby arms smaller
- you can’t hate your tummy flatter
- you can’t hate the cellulite off your thighs
- you can’t hate the dark circles away from your eyes
Hating on yourself isn’t going to miraculously change the parts of you that you’re disliking. Actually, hating on yourself only perpetuates the issue and stagnates the progress you truly desire.
So what’s a girl to do?
Try these 3 things on for size:
- Respect your journey
- Commit to the evolution of your higher self
- Love more, hate less
If you do these 3 things, and remain committed, I PROMISE you miracles will happen. But I’m not gonna lie, it won’t be easy. That’s because most of us (especially women) aren’t that good at holding ourselves accountable to long-term goals.
That’s where I can help!
